What happens when the AI hype fizzles? Does it change how an entire country will approach the space?
In October, I posted all my answers to Canada’s AI Strategy Survey. But I have questions of my own, and this is one of them.
Nearly everyone recognizes that the current level of interest and investment in AI will not be sustained indefinitely. How will the public and policy conversations change once AI falls out of the news cycle? Or, worse yet, once some high profile companies become financial victims of the hype cycle?
Let’s imagine that we were tasked with setting internet policy in 2003, after the dotcom crash and the public launch of MySpace - but before the founding of Facebook and the mobile web. An entire industry lost momentum and there was little interest in shaping its future at the policy level. But what a window of opportunity it could have been!
Such a window of opportunity may soon open up for current AI technologies. How will we use it?
